Artist: Grendel
Album: Timewave Zero
Release Date: April 20th, 2012 (Europe) / April 24th, 2012 (North America)
Label: Infacted Recordings / Metropolis Records

I’ll be honest; I haven’t always been big on Grendel. It wasn’t until the 2009 Chemicals + Circuitry EP that the act piqued my interest. As a result, I had high hopes for the next album. Now JD Tucker, the head behind Grendel, did not disappoint with the release of the much-anticipated new album Timewave Zero. (Keep reading…)

EP Review
Written by: Iggy

Artist: ∆AIMON
EP: Flatliner
Release Date: April 17th, 2012
Label: Tundra Dubs

There seems to be something happening that is putting the status quo of “dark” music on notice. Call it witch house, drag, or whatever, an about-face and split lies in wait for “dark” music. Out of that, an act that has recently come on the scene is ∆AIMON. Their really exciting avant-garde approach not only makes them a clear-cut act to follow, but who’s new EP Flatliner is the definition of this new take on dark, electronic music. (Keep reading…)

ESA (Jamie Blacker) returns with part one of a two-part concept album release. With the stimulus of lust and the energy and instability that often results being the bottom line, the aptly titled Themes Of Carnal Empowerment Pt. 1: Lust is an arranged rhythmic, dark, and seductive foray centered on the idea of the four letters of lust. Album Review

Artist: Unheilig
Album: Lichter der Stadt
Release Date: March 16th, 2012
Label: Vertigo Berlin / Universal Music Group

Since going full-on mainstream in Germany with 2010’s effort Große Freiheit, Unheilig and its lead vocalist Der Graf were catapulted into a sudden and surprising commercial success. Last year, Unheilig won an Echo for album of the year for Große Freiheit. The Echo Awards is the local equivalent of the Grammys, so that’s quite an accomplishment for an act that originally came out and solely catered to the “dark” subculture. Given all that, the act had recently come under fire for “selling out” and going for a more pop rock sound. Stylistically a departure, Lichter der Stadt is a mixed bag, but still with some redeeming qualities to it. (Keep reading…)
